At 16:00 hours, two of IsraelExperts’ Taglit-Birthright Israel Culinary groups began cooking on three different army bases to feed a total of 900 hungry soldiers. Excitement was in the air when we arrived at our first stop on the Dinner Impossible mission at Nahal Oz army base. Here our participants were given the task of cooking for about 400 people on the base.

The following article was written by IsraelExperts alumni Andrea Cline in the Zionsville Times Sentinel

A few weeks ago, I wrote that I was about to have a dream come true: a trip to Israel, with my sister, to learn more about our Jewish heritage and to experience a place important in history to many different cultures.

This is what I want to tell you about that trip.

When most people talk about their favorite memories of Taglit-Birthright Israel, they mention the “highlights” including hiking Masada at sunrise, the beach in Tel Aviv and the Old City of Jerusalem. But when I think back on my trip, I remember the long bus rides and the constant extraordinary view from the window of the bus. On Taglit-Birthright Israel you drive through almost the entire country and the view from your bus gives you a fascinating peek into Israeli society and the beauty of the Land of Israel.

IsraelExperts is proud to offer the LGBTQ National Taglit-Birthright Israel trip for this summer 2012. This exciting trip is specifically designed for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer/Questioning young Jewish adults and their family/friends from all across the U.S.  The program seeks to layer participants' Jewish identities and LGBTQ identities in a whole new way with Israel as a setting for this process. In addition to experiencing all of the classic Israel tour highlights, we will also delve into the world of LGBTQ Israel: arts & culture, Israeli Gay rights, living within a highly gendered society, the Open House and much more. Participants will gain a better understanding of their own Judaism as well as the ways in which LGBTQ life flourishes and faces great challenges in the State of Israel.

For more information about this exciting new trip please contact sarah@israelexperts.com and make sure to sign up for our summer trip updates to get up to the minute registration information.

LGBTQ Birthright Trip

Many participants want to stay in Israel after their Taglit-Birthright Israel trip ends to relax by the beach, volunteer or continue exploring. The best way to do so is to extend your ticket prior to departure through Gil Travel (Taglit-Birthright Israel's travel agency). We highly recommend that you extend your stay prior to leaving the US since all seats are subject to availability and stipulations by the relevant airline. Although some airlines permit the extension to be made in Israel, flight availability can often be a problem on short notice and you don’t want to miss out on a wonderful opportunity to continue your experience in Israel.

You can only make your extension request through the Gil Travel website and must allow sufficient time for it to be processed prior to your departure date.

The link for extension reservations is: http://www.giltravel.com/extensionsinfo.htm

In recent years, the port, or “namal,” in Yafo has not been known as the most beautiful place to visit. The buildings there, some abandoned and run-down looking, didn’t have great appeal for tourists. Some saw these buildings as an eye sore, while others saw them as an art canvas. Castro, Israel’s first (and very popular) fashion clothing store, decided to turn the crumbling walls into works of art in their “Castro Street Project.” They hired graffiti artists from all over the world including Israel, Japan and Germany.

At IsraelExperts we strive to create an innovative itinerary that not only leaves you with memories of climbing Masada and floating in the Dead Sea, but also exposes you to a vision of Israel not often seen.  At the end of the day, if you have agreed to disagree, opened your eyes to a new perspective, or questioned your own ideas then our job is done. We encourage our participants to keep the conversation going even after their return home.

On your Taglit-Birthright Israel trip you saw the Western Wall, you climbed Massada, you floated in the Dead Sea, now it’s time to venture off the beaten path and explore other beautiful sites that Israel has to offer.

Taglit-Birthright Israel Mega Events are occasions that bring together all Taglit-Birthright Israel participants who are in Israel at the same time for a night to celebrate their first trip to Israel as a part of the Taglit-Birthright Israel program. Mega Events happen several times throughout the year and one of those times is going on right now!
